Understanding the different type of TV sets.

We all love to get captivated by the moving colors and rich motion pictures on our TV screens, don’t we? Considering our everlasting love for crystal-clear colors and image quality, our obsessions with choosing the right display type for our TV set stands true. Whether you are a new or experienced buyer in the world of TV sets, one thing you must keep in mind is the ability of segregating different TV types from one another.

TVs are classified into different types on the basis of integrated technology, display type, resolution and screen size. Some of the most common TV types include:

Types on Basis of Display

Plasma TV

Plasma TVs were launched in the 1990s as an improvement to the direct view TV sets. These TVs have a flat screen which is integrated with a cellular grid containing plasma-filled pixels. Electrodes flake the plasma layer, creating an ionized gas which responds to electric fields and imparts display colors. Plasma TVs have faster frame responses and easier scalability than direct view types.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

The LCD technology is way older than the Plasma TV. However, the realization of LCD TV sets takes place further down the road than the Plasma TV. LCD TVs are integrated with liquid crystals which are present in a fluid form despite retaining their crystal structures. Due to their uni-directional orientation, the LCD pixels interact with electrodes and two polarizing filters to impart deep colors and swift motions on the screen whenever voltage is applied.

Light Emitting Diode Display (LED)

The LEDs are similar to the LCDs and differ only in a single way that the Liquid crystal filled in the pixels of the TV screen is replaced by backlit Light emitting diodes.

Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED)

OLEDs are quite a recent TV type and they contain an organic, electrically-charged, light-emitting compound in their display. Two electrodes sandwich the pool of small light emitting molecules and polymers. They do not have any backlighting as the light is emitted by the particles themselves. These TV sets are lighter and thinner than the former models.

Quantum Light-Emitting Diode (QLED)

Launched only a few years ago, QLEDs are hailed as the future of LCD displays. They have nanoparticles or quantum dots immersed in the standard LCD display. As a result, you get to enjoy richer, bright colors. The QLEDs last longer and have bigger display sizes.

Types on Basis of Screen Resolution

Currently, 4 types of screen resolutions are available for 4 different types of TV sets. The resolutions include:

  • High Definition or HD display which boasts 720p on screen
  • Full High Definition or Full HD display which has pixels of 1,080p
  • Ultra HD or 4K resolution type which has pixels of 2,160p
  • And finally the 8K latest resolution type which has 4,320p

Types on Basis of Screen

On basis of screen type, two forms of TV sets are available in market:

  • Flat Screen
  • Curved Screen

Curved screen is more popular due to its edge-less screen view.

Types on Basis of Features

On the basis of technology, TV sets can be divided into 3 types:

  • Smart TV sets
  • Voice Assisted TV Sets
  • High Dynamic Range or HDR TV sets
